Soccer shooting is a complex multi-joint movement that most players never analyze in detail. This guide breaks down every component of the perfect shooting motion — from approach angle to follow-through — with the specific measurements AI coaching uses to score your form.
1. Approach Angle Approach the ball at a 30–45 degree angle from the side. This allows your hips to rotate through the ball and generates more power than a straight-on approach. The approach angle also determines shot direction.
2. Plant Foot Position Plant your non-kicking foot 6–8 inches beside the ball, pointing toward your target. This is the most critical positioning element — plant foot position determines shot direction more than anything else.
3. Body Position at Contact Lean slightly forward over the ball at contact. Leaning back sends the ball over the bar. Your head should be over the ball, eyes focused on the contact point.
4. Contact Point on the Ball
5. Hip Rotation Power in soccer shooting comes from hip rotation, not arm strength. As you kick, your hips rotate from closed (pointing away from target) to open (pointing at target). The faster the hip rotation, the more power generated.
6. Follow-Through Your kicking leg should continue upward after contact, with your body weight transferring forward. Stopping the leg after contact kills power. The follow-through direction determines shot height.
