A little setup. A clearer recording.

Filming checklist & camera placement planner

Know where to put the phone, what to keep in frame, and what to check before you press record. Choose your movement to build a practical plan—not a technique or safety score.

Numbered camera positions are relative suggestions. Shading is not a safe zone or a field-of-view measurement. Dotted arc reminds you to check implement clearance. Check actual clearance and framing in person.

1 / Primary

Side / profile

See the visible trunk and hip / knee motion through a repetition.

Place the camera beside the movement, looking across it, outside the full movement and implement path. Adjust its position and lens height until the entire action fits without an extreme upward or downward tilt. Distance and height depend on your lens, body, movement and available clearance; the diagram is not a measurement.

Front alignment

See both feet and knees without one side hiding the other.

Place the camera in front of the athlete, looking toward them, outside the full movement and implement path. Adjust its position and lens height until the entire action fits without an extreme upward or downward tilt. Distance and height depend on your lens, body, movement and available clearance; the diagram is not a measurement.

Keep the whole action in frame

  • Include head, both feet, and any bar or dumbbells at the highest and lowest positions. Leave margin around the entire repetition.
  • Use landscape width for the action; keep enough vertical room for hands and implements above the head.
  • Secure the phone in the stand; check its footing and that it cannot fall into the movement area. Keep the camera stationary for each clip.

Constraints to check first

Your selections do not verify safety, clearance or video quality. Resolve constraints in the actual recording area.

Clearance comes before the shot

Keep the camera and stand outside the rack, spotter access, and the possible path of a dropped weight. Never move safety equipment to improve a shot.

Consent and privacy

Get permission from anyone identifiable in the recording and follow the venue's filming rules. Avoid changing areas, bystanders, children's faces, names on screens and private conversations. Review the background and audio before sharing; do not assume venue access is permission to record.

Task progress only—not a safety or quality score. Checks stay in this page session and are not included in a setup link.

A simple filming sequence

  1. Step 1: Confirm permission, consent and full movement clearance. Resolve setup constraints before attempting a recording.
  2. Step 2: Set the side / profile view. Rehearse an unloaded repetition and check the start, bottom and finish in the preview.
  3. Step 3: Record and review a brief test clip. Check full-body / implement visibility and lighting; adjust the setup while no one is performing.
  4. Step 4: With a secure stand, start recording before entering the movement area. Allow a still start and finish; trim later if needed. If handheld is your only option, obtain support or a partner first.
  5. Step 5: Review the primary clip, then stop the action before moving to the front alignment view. Capture a second short sample only if that placement is workable.
  6. Step 6: Save the view labels with your clips. For later comparison, reuse the same orientation and relative camera position where practical.

What this plan cannot tell you

  • This local checklist plans recording only. It does not upload or analyze video, diagnose injury, score technique, certify safety or measure hidden forces.
  • A visible side view cannot establish load distribution, joint forces or injury risk.
  • Camera perspective, lens distortion, blur and occlusion can change what a clip appears to show. Two separate views are not a calibrated 3D measurement.
  • There is no universal camera height, distance or frame rate for every body, lens and movement. Use a test clip and your device's guidance. Ask a qualified coach for sport-specific views; stop if pain, uncertainty or inadequate clearance makes recording inappropriate.

Tool summary. This free website planner turns a movement, recording goal and setup constraints into two camera views, a framing reminder and a reusable checklist. The default squat plan is readable without running the interactive controls. It plans a recording; it does not evaluate the athlete.

Key takeaways

  • Frame the entire action—not just the starting pose. Feet, overhead hands and the end of an implement can leave the image during movement.
  • Keep the camera steady and repeat the relative view for comparisons. A different angle can change the apparent position of body parts.
  • Limited space and poor light require changes to the real setup. Neither a diagram nor a completed checklist verifies that the area is safe or the clip is usable.
  • Ask a coach which views they need. A face-on golf view is not the same viewpoint as a front-view squat, and two separate clips are not synchronized measurements.

Where the framing guidance comes from

OnForm's user guide discusses full-body visibility, a steady camera, lighting and the sensitivity of video review to camera angle. These are useful recording principles: preview every endpoint, keep the camera still and check an actual test clip before recording more.

For golf, OnForm's filming guide describes face-on and down-the-line views, a stable tripod and keeping the clubhead in frame through the swing. This planner uses those limited framing and stability ideas, while leaving exact placement to your actual space, lens and coach.

These sources do not endorse or validate this planner. Movement-specific reminders are general editorial guidance, not scientific measurements, diagnosis or individualized coaching. No fixed camera dimensions or recording frame rate are prescribed.
