Marta Kostyuk has broken through to claim her first WTA 1000 title, defeating Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open. The 23-year-old Ukrainian capped off a phenomenal week with a commanding performance, securing the biggest title of her career in 1 hour and 21 minutes.

Kostyuk, entering the tournament as the No. 26 seed, navigated a challenging draw that included victories over top players like Jessica Pegula and Linda Noskova. In the final, she started strongly, utilizing her powerful serve-plus-forehand combination to take the first set 6-3 in just 34 minutes. She won 89% of her first-serve points and hit eight forehand winners compared with just three total winners from Andreeva.

The second set proved to be a tighter affair, with Andreeva fighting back to take a 3-1 lead. However, Kostyuk's resilience shone through as she leveled the match and eventually secured a crucial break in the 11th game. She then served out the match, saving two championship points — the second with an ace — before Andreeva's backhand sailed long.

"A very special two weeks here," Kostyuk said during the trophy ceremony. "If you look at the stats, up until last year I think I was 2-7 in Madrid, so I never thought I would be able to lift the trophy here."

The victory makes Kostyuk the first Ukrainian player to win the Madrid Open title since the event's inauguration in 2009 and marks her second title of the season, following her triumph in Rouen. She is just the seventh player born in the 2000s to win a WTA 1000 title. For Andreeva, despite the loss, the runner-up finish continues a strong season that will see her rise to a projected No. 7 in the world rankings.
