Kentucky Derby 2026: Renegade the Favorite as Churchill Downs Prepares for the Run for the Roses
The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Renegade enters as the morning-line favorite at 4-1, but Churchill Downs oddsmaker Nick Tammaro says there is "virtually nothing separating" the top three contenders.
The Top Contenders
Renegade (4-1) has shown improving speed figures in each of his last three races, with his Thoroughbred speed ratings and Beyer speed figures trending sharply upward. His ability to rate off the pace and accelerate in the stretch makes him dangerous on the classic Churchill Downs surface.
Commandment is considered by many analysts to be the most complete horse in the field, with strong workouts and a versatile running style that can adapt to any pace scenario.
Further Ado rounds out the top three and represents excellent value at longer odds given his consistent form and affinity for the Churchill Downs track.
The Race
The Kentucky Derby is a 1¼-mile race on dirt, open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. With a full field of 20 horses, pace and positioning will be critical. Early speed horses risk burning out in the final turn, while closers must navigate traffic from the back of the pack.
Watch
The Kentucky Derby is broadcast on NBC and Peacock. Post time is approximately 6:57 p.m. ET.
