Alexander Zverev Dominates Cobolli to Reach Madrid Open Semi-Finals

Alexander Zverev avenges his recent loss to Flavio Cobolli with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory, advancing to his fourth ATP Masters 1000 semi-final of the season at the Madrid Open.

Alexander Zverev continued his stellar run of form on clay, dismantling Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-4 to secure his spot in the semi-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open. The victory served as sweet revenge for the German, who had suffered a surprising defeat to the 23-year-old Italian just 12 days prior in Munich.

Zverev was imperious from the start inside the Manolo Santana Stadium, dropping a mere seven points behind his first serve throughout the 90-minute encounter. He struck eight aces in the opening set, completely overwhelming Cobolli's defenses.

With this win, Zverev joins an exclusive club consisting of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Jannik Sinner as the only men to reach the semi-finals at all four opening Masters 1000 events of a season. He also set a new record for the most tour-level clay-court victories by a German man in the Open Era, surpassing Philipp Kohlschreiber with his 179th win.

"No revenge. I love Flavio. He's one of my favourite guys on Tour," Zverev stated graciously after the match. "In Munich, he played an amazing match and I didn't play a very good match. Today, it was maybe the opposite."

For tennis players, Zverev's performance underscores the critical importance of a high first-serve percentage on clay. A common mistake I see beginners make is sacrificing accuracy for pure power on their first serve. Zverev's ability to consistently hit his spots allowed him to dictate the rallies from the first shot. Focusing on toss consistency and smooth kinetic chain transfer during your serve practice can yield significant improvements.

Zverev will next face 21-year-old Belgian sensation Alexander Blockx, who upset defending champion Casper Ruud to reach his maiden Masters 1000 semi-final.
